About the deck

At Refold, we’re focused on teaching you to understand real English, as it’s actually spoken. Unfortunately, English has lots of weird features that make it hard to understand.

Why do you need to learn spelling?

Every language has a different set of symbols that represent words, such as “a, e, i, o, u, ж ю щ ф, あ, い, う, え, お,” and more.

Even if two languages use the same symbol, it may sound completely different! The English “j” sounds very different from the Spanish “j.” In many languages, these symbols are occasionally standardized to remove weird spellings, but English is not! It’s kept every spelling used over the past 500 years.

If you want to be able to read English and achieve accurate pronunciation, you’ll need to know how those symbols work!

Introducing the English Reading Deck

Our English Reading deck is made especially to help you understand English spelling as fast as possible.

We examined all the sounds that are used in General American English and used our years of experience in linguistics, phonology, and English as a Second Language education to invent a new way to study English spelling.

How to learn English Spelling

  • Study each of the sounds in the language.
  • Practice reading those sounds. Some sounds are represented by 7 different spellings!
  • Immerse in English media content! You’ll need to expose yourself to the language to notice and reinforce the spelling.
  • Now that you’ve gotten a grasp on reading English as it is, everything will solidify in your head over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is this deck right for me?

We recommend studying this deck as early as possible in your learning process. Understanding English spellings will help your reading and listening throughout the process.

We’d also recommend it to learners that have been studying for a while, but are still surprised by how certain words are pronounced.

  • Which dialect/accent of English is used in this deck?

    General American English

  • Does this deck include all sounds and spellings in American English?

It includes all the sounds, but we excluded some very rare spellings, like the spelling used in the name “Siobhan.”

  • Are there any free resources I can use instead?

Unfortunately, not that we’ve found. We created this deck because after weeks of research and looking for other tools, we couldn’t find one that taught sounds and spelling the way we think it should be taught.

  • I finished the deck, now what?

Congrats! This is just the first step in your English reading journey. Now you have to go READ. We recommend reading and listening at the same time (TV w/ subtitles, book with audiobook) so that you can learn how every word is pronounced.
