About the deck

At Refold, we’re all about using real native content to become fluent. However, this can be quite challenging when natives speak so darn quickly! Speed up your ability to hear words and sentences by mastering the sounds as quickly as possible.

Why do you need to learn sounds?

Every language has a different set of sounds that are used to make words. Many of them do not exist in English. In order to understand full-speed Spanish, you will need to teach your brain these news sounds.

If you want to be able to hear full-speed Spanish and achieve accurate pronunciation, you’ll need to know what those sounds are!

Introducing the Sounds of Spanish Deck

Our Sounds of Spanish deck is optimized to help you understand native Spanish speakers as quickly as possible.

We examined all the sounds that are used in standard Latin American Spanish and General American English and used our years of experience in linguistics, phonology, English, and Spanish to make a never-before-seen resource aimed at regular people who just want to hear what’s being said!

To save you time, we only included the sounds and exercises that you absolutely need:

  • Sounds to learn: 31
  • Minimal pairs to practice: 24
  • Sentences to analyze: 20

How to learn the sounds of Spanish:

  1. Study each of the sounds in the language.
  2. Practicing hearing those sounds.
  3. Immerse in Spanish media content! You’ll need to expose yourself to the language to notice and reinforce the sounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Couldn't I build my own deck?

You could! But the whole point of this deck is that it’s not a resource that is very common. Sourcing all the recordings and knowing what to include would be a lot of work! You’re welcome to give it a shot, however. It’d probably be great practice, but not a very efficient use of time.

  • Will this deck give me a perfect accent?

No, but it will put you on the path to sounding how you want and not being stuck with an accent you don’t like. Learning a new accent takes hundreds of hours of practice. But it’s MUCH easier if you can properly hear the sounds of the language.

  • Are there free decks available?

Nothing like this! There are some similar resources out there (all of which are paid), but none of them are comprehension-focused, which is what you really need for mastering the sounds of a new language.

  • I finished the deck, now what?

Awesome job! Keep doing your reviews as they come up so that these sounds stay fresh in your mind.

Make sure you’re also immersing in Spanish *a lot*. You’ll need to hear these sounds thousands of times in the real world before they become burned into your brain forever.

You should also join the Refold Spanish Discord server and ask for media recommendations from the awesome group over there: https://refold.link/refold-spanish-discord

  • How was this deck made?

Two members of the Refold team made it! Don, a seasoned linguistics professor with over 15 years of experience teaching classes on IPA, and Ben, an avid Spanish learner and English accent coach deeply immersed in the intricacies of phonology for nearly a decade, put their minds together to come up with this one of a kind Anki deck. The Refold team has somehow attracted a bunch of language nerds. Who knew!?
