YouTube is an Amazing Language Immersion Tool

YouTube is overflowing with content from all over the world! It’s one of the best places for language immersion without actually moving to another country. From podcasts to vlogs, lets plays, and educational videos—there’s something for everyone in almost every language!

The Problem With YouTube for Immersion Learning

The problem with YouTube for immersion learning is that most people already have YouTube accounts set up! So when you try to use your main YouTube account for immersion learning, YouTube won’t give you content in your new language because it already knows who you are and what language you speak!

The algorithm won’t suddenly shift overnight just because you have decided to learn a new language.

The best way to train the algorithm to give you content in your new language is to start over with a new profile just for immersion. But what if you pay for YouTube Premium? Will you need to pay for two accounts?

No!

Creating a New Channel: The Solution to Your YouTube Language Learning Issues

There’s an easy trick to setting up a brand-new YouTube language learning profile without creating a completely separate account!

Instead of creating a new account with a separate email, you’ll set up a new channel on YouTube.

Here’s why:

  • You can log in to multiple profiles with a single email sign-on.
  • Switching between profiles is quick and painless.
  • If you purchase YouTube Premium, it applies to each channel associated with the main email.
  • You can change the channel’s language and country without affecting your “main” YouTube account!

Luckily, creating a new channel on YouTube is really easy. Here’s how it works…

How To Create a Language Learning YouTube Account

1. Login to your YouTube account on your computer.

2. Click your profile icon in the upper right-hand corner and click “Switch Account.”

    3. Click “View all channels.”

    4. Click “Create a channel.”

    5. Name your channel, agree with the terms, and then click “Create.”

      6. Verify your account by following the prompts.

      7. Congratulations! You created a new immersion account!

Note: Switching back and forth between your native language and immersion language account is easy! Just click your profile icon in the upper right-hand corner and click “Switch Account.”

How to Set Up Your YouTube Immersion Account

Now that you have a shiny new account, it’s time to train it to show you content in your new language! Here’s how:

        1. Change the location of the account. Click on your profile icon, select “location,” and choose a country that speaks your target language from the dropdown list.

          2. Change the account language. Click your profile icon, select language, then select the language you are learning from the drop-down list.

Now everything should be in the language you’re learning! If a video in your native language sneaks into your recommendations, you can tell YouTube that you’re not interested in it by hovering over the video in your feed, clicking the three little dots, and selecting “Not Interested.”

          A Few More Tips…

If you want to train the new algorithm to show you interesting content in your new language, you’ll need to search for content you enjoy in that language! Translate a few search terms with Google or ChatGPT to help you find content in your new language!

For example, if you’re learning Spanish and you love travel videos, look up the word for “travel” in Spanish (viajar) and search for it on YouTube!

There are a few more ways you can train your account! One of our favorites is something we call “seeder playlists.” These are playlists filled with content in your target language that you can use to help quickly train the algorithm.
