About the deck

At Refold, we’re focused on teaching you to understand real English, as it’s actually spoken. Unfortunately, English has lots of weird features that make it hard to understand.

What’s a phrasal verb?

You probably already know thousands of words, but have you noticed that simple words can have entirely unexpected meanings?

Sometimes, when you combine two or three words, the meaning can COMPLETELY change. It won’t have anything to do with any of the individual words.

That’s a phrasal verb: when multiple words combine to form a new meaning.

And to make things MORE complicated, each phrasal verb can have TONS of different meanings!

Not sure what we mean? Here’s an example:

Blow: to move air
Up: a direction

Blow up:

  • Blow up a bomb
  • Blow up a balloon
  • My favorite band is blowing up on Spotify

The power of priming

Do phrasal verbs confuse you? Don’t worry. This deck is the perfect tool to help you overcome this challenge.

We start by teaching you a phrasal verb and its meanings. Then, we give you multiple example sentences to help you practice identifying and understanding the phrasal verb in the real world.

These 150 phrasal verbs cover ~75%[1] of the commonly used phrasal verbs in English.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is this deck right for me?

We recommend studying this deck after you’ve finished the Inglés-mil deck or after you know 2500+ words.

  • Which dialect of English is used in this deck?

American English. We removed phrasal verbs only used in British English and other dialects.

  • How were the words chosen?

We started from the research by Garnier & Schmitt on Phrasal Verb frequency accounting for polysemy: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1362168814559798.

From there, we manually curated the lists of words and their meanings.

  • Does this deck include all the meanings of each phrasal verb?

No, we didn’t include meanings that we considered “obvious.” If the meaning isn’t different than the words by themselves, we didn’t include it.

We also didn’t include meanings that seemed uncommon or strange.

  • Couldn't I build my own deck?

Yep! It just takes time, energy, and effort. This Phrasal Verbs deck took our team of data scientists and English natives about 100 hours to create. We’ve done the hard work so you don’t have to.

  • Aren't there free decks available?

    None like this one!

  • Will this make me fluent?

NO! This just builds the initial foundation for understanding English. Fluency comes after thousands of hours spent with the language.

  • I finished the deck, now what?

Congrats 🥳! Head on over to our guide on sentence mining to learn how to make cards directly from your immersion.
