We started with Mark Davies’ excellent 5,000-word Spanish frequency list. From this list, we removed over 3700 words that you can easily learn through immersion (i.e. words that look the same as English words or are just similar forms of words you’ve already learned). This left only the cream of the crop — the 1000 most words that are the most important to learn through dedicated vocabulary study.

1) The quality of the deck is great. The design, native recordings, lack of errors, etc. makes it a pleasure to use.

2) The Anki card format is perfect: target word with audio on the front, and definition + example sentence with audio (and hidden translation) on the back.

I’ve honestly been nothing but impressed by both the deck and LT — LT is an incredible project especially considering it’s free. I’ve begun reading Olly Richards’ book of short stories and am loving it so far — after which I will probably attempt a proper light novel. I did 110 cards (I only found 2 new words), and I must say, the quality of this deck is astounding, I really like how they use the words that you just learned in the later sentences, I will definitely use the German 1K deck when it comes out and I start my German journey. I plan on finishing the deck by the end of next month (20 new words per day, on top of my current stuff). The quality of the audio is also very impressive, overall, it is worth every penny and so much more.

I just started he ES1K deck last night… (second attempt)… What a difference compared to 5 or 6 months ago… I had given up on it then. But now, it looks clean. There is audio. The audio is great. (The audio has to be computer generated, right?) There are example sentences. Great work!

That’s the flipside… I’ve never found a high-quality Spanish deck. Many of them have terrible sentences. And certainly nobody took the time to have a native speaker record all 1000 words and sentences. For only $19… I earn $25/hr+ at work… to make a deck like this would have cost me hundreds.

Wow, about 40 days in Spanish learning (30 days with es1k deck). And I am reading this a1 Spanish book, and for the first time I can fully understand the story, what an incredible feeling this is.

I never thought I would be able to understand kids stories in another language. I think the seeds that this deck plants are finally sprouting, watching comprehensible input videos, like dreaming Spanish is becoming easier by day!

Couldn't I build my own deck?
Yep! It just takes time, energy, and effort. The Spanish deck took our team of data scientists, high-level Spanish learners, and Spanish natives about 150 hours to create. We’ve done the hard work so you don’t have to.
Why shouldn't I use Duolingo?
If it’s your first time studying a language, then you probably should.

Duolingo is a language-learning video game. It’s a great way to try out a language to see if you like it and to build a daily habit of engaging with the language.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t get you very far, and definitely won’t help you understand Spanish.
Aren't there free decks available?
Yep! But they have a few problems:
1. They aren’t focused on helping you understand TV shows and casual conversation.
2. They haven’t filtered out the “easy words”.
3. They don’t have native audio.
4. The example sentences (if they even have any) are crowdsourced and usually low quality.
