Friends works well for learning Spanish because most people already know the story, so all their attention goes to the language. The Latin American Spanish dub uses everyday, neutral Spanish in short 20-minute episodes. The hard part is finding the Spanish audio track where you live and keeping up with the speed, so study each season's vocabulary first.
Friends follows six friends in their twenties in Manhattan: Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler, and Joey. They live in two apartments across the hall from each other, spend their afternoons in the same coffee house, and talk about what everyone talks about: work, dates, breakups, family, and money.
That makes it a great show to rewatch in Spanish:
You already know the story. Most learners have seen Friends in English. When you know what happens, your attention is free for the language, and you can follow scenes that would lose you in a new show.
Short episodes. Just over 20 minutes. Watch one, replay the scenes you missed, and you are not worn out.
Everyday Spanish. The dub is full of the Spanish people actually use: ordering coffee, apologizing, arguing, flirting.
The format helps. Running jokes repeat, every character has catchphrases, and the laugh track tells you where the joke was.
How hard is the Spanish in Friends?
Easier than most people expect, with a few traps:
It is fast. The dub keeps the original timing, so lines come quickly and characters talk over each other.
The humor hangs on single words. A pun or an expression you do not know, and the joke is gone.
It is a dub. The lines were written to fit the original, so some jokes are rewritten rather than translated.
It is from the nineties. Answering machines, landlines, and a few expressions that sound a little dated now.
The good news: TV dialogue is easier than it looks. If you already know the 1000 most common Spanish words and the words that at least two of our Avatar, Bluey, and Pokémon decks teach, a good share of every episode is already within reach. What holds you back is a specific set of words in each season. To measure it, we analyzed the full dialogue of the Latin American Spanish dub for the first three seasons. With each season's vocabulary deck studied (and that base in place):
Season
Lines you can fully follow
Lines with just one unknown word
1
about 76%
another 19%
2
about 80%
another 17%
3
about 80%
another 16%
The Season 2 and 3 figures assume you also studied the earlier season decks.
Where to watch Friends in Spanish
This is what we found on October 16, 2026. Availability varies by country and changes over time, so check your region before you subscribe.
Country
Where it streams
Spanish audio
United States
HBO Max (also as an add-on through Hulu or Prime Video)
Not confirmed on every version; check the audio menu
United Kingdom
HBO Max
Listed for the Prime Video channel version; check the audio menu
Canada
Crave
English and French only, as far as we could tell
Australia
Netflix and HBO Max
Netflix Australia has English audio only
In Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia, Netflix carries Friends with Spanish audio and Spanish subtitles. The Spanish dub on Netflix in Spain is most likely the Castilian one, not the Latin American one.
The honest summary: in English-speaking countries, the Spanish audio track is hit or miss. Before you pay for anything, open an episode, go to the audio menu, and look for Spanish (Latin America) or Español (Latinoamérica).
Spanish subtitles
Use Spanish subtitles, not English ones. English subtitles make you read instead of listen; Spanish subtitles help you split fast speech into words and spot the ones you studied. Keep in mind that dub subtitles often do not match the dubbed audio word for word, because they are translated separately.
If your service has no Spanish subtitles, or you want the file to study with another tool, here is how to get them: how to download subtitles for free.
How to watch actively
Leaving an episode on in the background does little. A few ways to get more out of it:
Intensive listening. Pick a one-minute scene and replay it until you understand every line: first without subtitles, then with Spanish subtitles, then without again. We walk through it in intensive listening.
asbplayer. A free browser extension that shows interactive subtitles over the video and lets you replay each line with a keyboard shortcut. It works with streaming services once you load a subtitle file.
We made a vocabulary deck for each of the first three seasons of Friends, built from the Latin American Spanish dub. Each one teaches the words from that season that block the most lines, chosen from our analysis of the real dialogue. Each card teaches the word in the sense the episode uses it, with a short, clear example sentence written for learners, Latin American Spanish audio, and an illustration on every card.
Seasons 1-3: all three decks together, for less than buying them separately
The simplest way to use them: study the ten cards for an episode, then watch it. You can see every deck in the Friends store.
Learn the vocabulary of Friends before you watch
Each season deck teaches the words of Friends that actually come up in the episodes, in the sense the show uses them, with audio, images and clear example sentences. You study the words first, then watch the episodes and understand far more of them.
Refold Languages Inc is an independent company and is not affiliated with Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. or the creators of Friends. The decks are vocabulary study material and do not include the show.
FAQ
Is Friends good for learning Spanish?
Yes, if you watch the Latin American Spanish dub. You probably know the story already, the episodes are short, and the dialogue is everyday conversation. The challenge is speed and humor that depends on a single word.
Where can I watch Friends in Spanish?
Friends streams on HBO Max in the US and the UK, on Crave in Canada, and on Netflix and HBO Max in Australia, but the Spanish audio track is not offered everywhere. Open an episode and check the audio menu before you subscribe. Availability varies by country and changes over time.
Which Spanish is spoken in the Friends dub?
The Latin American dub uses neutral Latin American Spanish. Spain has its own Castilian dub, which uses different expressions in places.
What level do I need to watch Friends in Spanish?
An intermediate base: the 1000 most common Spanish words, basic grammar, and the words that at least two of our Avatar, Bluey, and Pokémon decks teach. With that in place, each season deck teaches the vocabulary specific to that season, which is what slows you down most.
Should I use subtitles?
Use Spanish subtitles, not English ones, at first. They help you separate words when people talk fast. Later, try rewatching episodes you know without subtitles.
